At the heart of the bog discover the game of water, the role of trees and the work of time.
the Mardelles, a natural area of ecological, flora and fauna interest, under a magical appearance, hides a huge weakness. It is indeed a very acid environment and not conducive to the other plants that arose from this complex network, domain of water filtration.
There are also many carnivorous plants, common frogs that breed for 2 days in late winter by gathering by the thousands.
The mid Mardelles is both fragile and dangerous because it is the home to rare species of moss, beautiful dragonflies and also reptiles.
The largest pond is the result of a sludge. Completely emptied of 3 meters of peat, it is returned to its original state. When cleaning we found a fossil trunk aged of 3,700 years, « the sleeper of the lake. » It is exposed on the platform overlooking the bog.
The small variety of ponds are covered with a carpet of Sphagnum, where large clumps of stiff sedge form as islands. Some host balls of common polytrics.
The Prémery Tourist Office also organises thematic discovery walks: Tuesday afternoon in July and August, revealing all the area’s secrets.
Each walk covers several kilometers and includes a guided visit (in French).
